Community Guidelines

Last updated October 1, 2026

Our commitment

ChatOnline is a platform where people create and chat with fictional AI characters. We believe in bold, imaginative storytelling, and we maintain a safe environment for the people telling those stories. These guidelines outline what isn't allowed on ChatOnline.

They apply to everyone on ChatOnline and to all content: characters, names, images, greetings, descriptions, definitions, tags, profiles, and conversations, whether you wrote it, uploaded it, or asked a character to produce it. Every character here is an A.I., not a real person, and nothing it says is fact or advice.

We reserve the right to update these guidelines and to take action on content or accounts at our discretion. We'll note the date at the top when they change.

1. Child Safety

Policy rationale: Protecting minors is our highest priority. We do not allow any content that sexualizes, exploits, or endangers children, and we do not allow users under 18 on the platform. This policy exists to prevent harm to real children and to ensure ChatOnline is never used to normalize inappropriate content involving minors.

We do not allow:

  • Sexual or romantic content involving minors

Any sexual, romantic, flirtatious, or suggestive portrayal of a character who is clearly or likely under 18, including non-human characters. Coding an underage character romantically, such as "someone's boyfriend" or "has a crush", is also prohibited. This applies even if the primary character is not a minor.
  • Minor characters

Any portrayal of a character under 18, human or not, as the character you chat with. Characters must be both physically and mentally adults. Minor-coded background figures are the only exception: a brief mention such as "has a teenage daughter" or "works hard to provide for his family" is acceptable, but they may not have dialogue in the greeting, a developed personality, or scenes built around interacting with them.
  • Ambiguous age presentation

Characters whose presentation suggests they could be under 18: a stated or implied age below 18, school-age framing, a childlike body or face, youthful art with no adult signals, or age regression. A character is demonstrably an adult when the submission shows it, through a stated age of 18 or over, an adult role or setting, or a portrait that clearly looks like an adult. When in doubt, establish the character as an adult.
  • Minor users

All users must be 18 or older. Accounts we reasonably believe belong to someone under 18 are removed.

2. Sexual Content

Policy rationale: ChatOnline permits romance between adult characters, but it is not an adult platform. Pornographic content is prohibited, and certain categories of sexual content are prohibited outright because of their potential for harm or their violation of broadly held ethical standards.

We do not allow:

  • Pornographic or sexually explicit content

Explicit descriptions of sexual acts, pornographic roleplay or greetings, and characters whose purpose is sex. This applies to text in any field and to conversations.
  • NSFW imagery

Images depicting nudity, exposed genitalia, sexual activity, or sexualized poses and clothing designed to arouse, including "censored" versions of such images.
  • Non-consent and coercion

Sexual content involving force, coercion, blackmail, captivity, or a character who cannot meaningfully consent.
  • Incest

Sexual or romantic portrayals of relationships between blood relatives.
  • Sexualization of animals and creatures

Sexual content involving real animals, creatures that resemble real animals, or any creature without adult human-level intelligence and the ability to consent and communicate.
  • Necrophilia

Sexualized content involving corpses, human or otherwise.
  • Sexualized religious figures

Sexual or romantic portrayals of religious figures.

3. Violence and Self-Harm

Policy rationale: Mature themes appear in fiction, and genre violence belongs in stories. We draw the line at content that encourages real-world harm, celebrates violence, or exists only to depict suffering.

We do not allow:

  • Excessive gore

Graphic violence described or depicted in lingering physical detail: extreme blood, torture, mutilation, cannibalism, or murder as spectacle. Characters whose whole point is violence.
  • Glorification of self-harm or suicide

Content that encourages, glorifies, or instructs self-harm, suicide, eating disorders, or dangerous challenges, including extreme fitness content and body shaming.
  • Animal cruelty

Gratuitous or excessive depictions of cruelty or torture toward real animals. Contextual depictions such as hunting or self-defense may be permitted.
  • Real-world instructions for harm

Instructions, facilitation, or promotion of illegal goods, services, or activities, including weapons, explosives, drugs, hacking, fraud, or evading the law. A story can mention a crime; it can't be a manual.

4. Harassment, Hate, and Discrimination

Policy rationale: Everyone on ChatOnline should feel welcome regardless of their background. We do not tolerate content that attacks people based on protected characteristics or that targets specific individuals.

We do not allow:

  • Discrimination and harmful stereotypes

Content that promotes or encourages discrimination based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, or other protected characteristics, including harmful stereotypes and conversion-related content.
  • Slurs

Harmful slurs directed at communities or groups of people.
  • Doxxing

Sharing personal information belonging to someone else without their consent, or content that creates a privacy or security risk for a real person.
  • Threats and calls for violence

Any threat directed at a real individual, including death threats, sexual threats, doxxing threats, or blackmail, and encouraging others to harm real individuals.
  • Harassment and defamation

Bullying, sexual harassment, personal attacks, repeated unwanted contact, and content that falsely portrays a real person in a damaging way.

5. Real-World People and Events

Policy rationale: Content involving real people, real tragedies, and real crimes can harm the people involved, violate their rights, and normalize violence or extremism. ChatOnline is for original fictional characters.

We do not allow:

  • Real people

Characters that depict or impersonate real people: celebrities, politicians, influencers, content creators, public figures, or private individuals, including thinly veiled versions and the use of a real person's name, likeness, voice, or persona.
  • Real person imagery

Portraits that are photographs or recognizable depictions of real people.
  • True crime

Depictions of specific real-world crimes, criminals, or crime victims and their families.
  • Specific criminal organizations

Named real-world criminal organizations. Generic or fictionalized references, such as "a crime family", are permitted.
  • Dictators, terrorism, and extremism

Any depiction of real dictators, real terrorists, real-world terrorism, or the promotion of terrorist or extremist ideology.
  • Glorification of real-world violence

Content that celebrates, promotes, or minimizes real-world violence, wars, disasters, or tragedies.

6. Advice and Misinformation

Policy rationale: Characters are fiction. Treating what they say as fact or professional guidance can cause real harm.

We do not allow:

  • Professional advice

Seeking or providing medical, legal, financial, or tax advice through the platform, and characters whose purpose is to give it. A character may have a profession in a story; it may not act as your doctor, lawyer, or advisor.
  • Harmful misinformation

False or misleading claims about health, elections, or finances that could cause harm.

7. Platform Integrity

Policy rationale: To maintain a healthy community and protect creators, we enforce rules around platform misuse, spam, and intellectual property.

We do not allow:

  • Vague or misleading content

Content that is intentionally vague or contradictory in a way that could plausibly be interpreted as violating these guidelines.
  • Copyright infringement

Content that infringes the intellectual property of third parties, companies, or individuals, including named franchise characters, brands, and uploaded images you don't have the right to use. Removed upon valid report.
  • Advertising and spam

Using ChatOnline to advertise products or services, posting spam, chain letters, contests, or pyramid schemes, or steering users to other platforms. A simple link indicating presence elsewhere is permitted.
  • Links to prohibited content

Links to illegal content or to adult content.
  • Financial solicitation

Demanding or begging for money or donations for personal causes.
  • Moderation and safety evasion

Creating new accounts to evade moderation actions, attempting to jailbreak or bypass safety systems, scraping, reverse engineering, disrupting the service, uploading malicious code, scams, or fraud.

Reporting violations

If you encounter content you believe violates these guidelines, including something a character generated, report it using the in-app reporting tools or contact us. Reports are reviewed by people.

Every character passes automated checks before it is published, and we review reports by hand. Depending on severity we may remove content, issue warnings, or suspend or permanently ban accounts. Serious child-safety violations result in an immediate permanent ban.

ChatOnline reserves the right to interpret and enforce these guidelines at our discretion.
